椿村

昔から済州では、椿が暴風林に利用されてきました。椿は済州の荒れ狂う風を防ぎ、初春には美しい花を咲かせ、落花した後は油がつくられるため、料理、化粧品、民間療法など多岐にわたって使われています。ここ新興里(シンフンリ)では、済州道地方記念物第27号に指定された椿群生地があります。樹齢300年以上の椿約50本と保護樹に指定された榎3本、タブノキ、ヤブニッケイ、在来種のみかんの木などが群生しています。この椿群生地は、地域住民による公有化の努力が実り、「美しい森全国大会」第8回で調和賞、第10回で森の番人賞を受賞しています。村へ続く道には椿の街路樹が20㎞ほど並んでいますが、冬と春の間に椿の花が咲く頃、キラキラ光る爽やかな緑と赤い花が調和していて、大変な壮観です。村では旅行者たちが楽しむことができるよう、椿森探訪はもちろん、椿の実と自然物を利用した雑貨づくり、椿石けんづくりや、椿ビビンバと椿おにぎりのような料理体験も行っており、ゲストハウスやペンションを運営しています。
