This is an undersea tunnel built to connect Tongyeong and Mireukdo Island. Constructed over a 16-month period from 1931 to 1932, the undersea tunnel in Tongyeong is Asia’s first submarine tunnel. The 483-meter-long concrete-paved road is a good place for a walk or a ride. The tunnel served as a convenient pass-through for Japanese fishermen during the colonial period. Despite its construction period, it is designated as a Modern Cultural Heritage of Korea, meaning that it is the result of the work of our ancestors. The word “Yongmundaryang” engraved at the entrance means “the entrance of an undersea tunnel that connects the island to land.” If you walk up the tunnel, you can see information board on the right, showing the history filled with joys and sorrows of Korea at the time. Though it was a tunnel connecting Mireukdo Island to Tongyeong, it is rarely in use ever since the opening of Chungmugyo Bridge and Tongeyongdaekyo Bridge. This place is accessible 24/7 free of charge.
