The spirit of artists and the brilliant skills of masters shine brightly at the National Intangible Heritage Center. Intangible heritage is a cultural heritage spanning oral tradition and expression, performance art, ceremony, festival, and traditional craft. Korea’s intangible heritages registered in UNESCO include the royal ancestral ritual in the Jongmyo shrine and its music, pansori epic chant, Gangneung Danoje festival, Ganggangsullae, Taekkyeon, Arirang, Kimjang, Nongak, and more. The National Intangible Heritage Center located by the riverside of Jeonjucheon Stream is a place for organizing, preserving, and passing down these intangible assets. You can see how people never lost the relaxed attitude toward life against natural environments and adversities and elevated in the form of art in the Permanent Exhibition Hall 1 consisting of traditional performances, arts, rituals, ceremonies, traditional plays, martial arts, and traditional knowledge. 3D projection mapping that projects videos made of light related to music, dance, and festivals on the target surface makes the experience more realistic. In the pavilion, visitors can enjoy the arts in nature on a large screen along with instruments and musical notes. The five Pansori chants are shared through the interactive sensor and multi-digital mapping for a more live experience. Visitors also can enjoy Cheoyongmu of the past and today. The Permanent Exhibition Hall 2 for displaying the works of those with craft and artistic accomplishment is even more interesting. It reminds us that there are so many brilliant and interesting intangible heritages, such as court embroidered Hwarot which was used as a ceremonial costume for the princesses of the Joseon Dynasty, the Jinju Geommu costumes worn by the Jinju Geommu Society, and the Cheoyong mask worn by master Kim Jung-seop. The National Intangible Heritage Center uses immersive content for visitors to get more familiar with and enjoy national intangible cultural heritages. Intangible cultural heritages are something that cannot be touched, but you can feel, touch, and experience them here. The National Intangible Heritage Center opened its door in 2014 and therefore is not well-known, but considering its grand size and content, it is a place not to be missed.
