The Royal Pond of Baekje Welcome to Gungnamji Pond! The Pond was the first artificial pond to be built on the Korean Peninsula in 634 A.D. Surrounded by serene willow trees, it embodies the gentle beauty characteristic of the Orient. Historical records reveal that the pond was linked to a 7.8-kilometer-long waterway, drawing water from a distant source. At its center stood an artificial island symbolizing the Bangjangseonsan Mountain, evidenced by the discovery of its original stone foundation at the pond's bottom. The advanced technology demonstrated in the pond's construction reflects the progressive capabilities of the people of Baekje. The island and the pavilion were restored in the 1960s in accordance with historical records. Crossing the bridge to the island, visitors can consider visiting Gungnamji Pond during the summer to experience the annual lotus festival. The air becomes infused with the delightful scent of fully bloomed lotus flowers, presenting a magnificent spectacle. Over 1,400 years ago, the king of Baekje would enjoy the pond's scenery from the pavilion, amidst the sweet fragrance of lotuses. Why not take a moment to relax in the pavilion and appreciate the stunning views? While resting in the pavilion, would you like to hear a love story associated with the pond? King Mu, who commissioned the construction of Gungnamji Pond, was raised outside the palace, unaware of his lineage due to political circumstances. As he grew older, he fell in love with the beautiful Princess Seonhwa from the Silla kingdom. However, their love faced obstacles not only due to his lower social status but also because Silla was an adversary of Baekje at that time. To communicate his feelings, he taught Silla's children a song implying that the princess was secretly enamored with a man from Baekje. When the Silla king heard this song, he was infuriated and banished the princess from the palace. Subsequently, she met King Mu outside the palace and reciprocated his feelings. Eventually, King Mu brought her back to Baekje and married her. Upon ascending the Baekje throne, he ordered the creation of the pond, presenting it as a gift to the princess. What do you think of this story? It is akin to the Baekje version of Romeo and Juliet. Keep an eye out for statues of the couple scattered throughout Buyeo as you explore!
