Chungmugong Yi Historic Site in Gohado Island It is the place where Admiral Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin stayed from October till March of the following year during the Jeongyu Wars in the 30th year of King Seonjo's reign in the Joseon Dynasty; storing military provisions and supplies to get ready for the war. Here, we may find the traces of Admiral Yi. It was designated as Historic Site No. 113 in 1963 and continues to be maintained under the name we know today. The fortress here was built by stones to divide the interior and the exterior and, to collect war funds, 1 to 3 seok of grains were taxed from ships passing through, which led to 10,000 seok of military provisions collected in just 10 days. Weapons and ships for the war are also said to have been manufactured here. Gohado is a small island located about 2km to the southwest of Mokpo, and its name first appeared in 《Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam》. 《Nanjung Ilgi》calls it Bohwado, and, on the Chungmugong Yi Monument in Gohado (Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 39), it is engraved as Gohwado. There was a shrine called Mochunggak in Gohwado and, here, the Chungmugong Yi Monument is enshrined. It was installed by Yi Bong-sang, the 5th descendant of Chungmugong, in 1722 and Nam Gu-man came up with the words of the inscription while Jo Tae-gu actually inscribed them. Although gunshot marks created by Japanese soldiers during the occupation era exist on the body of the monument, it is almost in perfect condition. It was once thrown away and left neglected on a hill nearby during the occupation period but was installed at the current location again post Liberation.
