Time travel to the 1930s in Gunsan Do you know which Korean city still holds the sad history back in the 1930s? It's a harbor city, Gunsan. Gunsan had become a base of plundering crops cultivated and harvested from the Honam Plains by the Japanese. Buildings centering around the inner harbor of Gunsan built in the 1930s sill remain today, making Gunsan the city of modern history museum. Gunsan Time Village encompasses the inner port of Gunsan port to Impi Station through the Honam Customs Museum, which was the former Gunsan Customs, and Modern Architecture Museum, which used to be the Gunsan branch of Josen Bank. Tourist attractions are all close to each other, 10 to 20 minutes in walking distance, making it convenient to travel on foot. 1-km-long tour course connecting the parking lot to the Jinpo Marine Park has barrier-free pedestrian passages for the convenience of wheelchair users. We will start off with the Gunsan Modern History Museum located at the end of the parking of the inner port of Gunsan. This museum features the Modern Life Hall, showing the life of Gunsan in the 1930s, Heroes of Independence Hall, and Marine Logistics History Hall. All entrances are barrier-free so that wheelchair users can enjoy the museum without any difficulty. The red western-style building located next to the museum is the former customs office. Built in European architectural style, the edifice is a marvel to look at. It was designated as a state-designated cultural property for its high historical value. Following the wide and straight Haemang-ro, you can see the Former Japanese 18th Bank. It was the local branch of a Japanese bank and the Gunsan branch of Joseon Bank, which appears in the epic novel The Muddy Current by the writer Chae Man-sik. We will end the tour after stopping by the Jinpo Marine Park, opened to commemorate the Jindodaecheop Battle, a victory of Jinpo in naval combat against Japanese forces led by General Choi Mu-seon during the Goryeo Dynasty. There are retired military crafts including landing vehicles tracked and F-86 jet fighter. The purpose of this park is to establish the right view of history and promote self-esteem. This is because this place, located in the inner harbor of Gunsan, was a fierce battlefield of the Jinpodaecheop War. Jinpodaecheop War was the battle that defeated Japan who invaded Jinpo, the mouth of Geumgang River, in 1380 (the 6th year of King Uwang's reign of Goryeo). History says that the Japanese raiders plundered and pillaged villages so badly that it was impossible to calculate the damage. During the time of difficulty, Choe Mu-seon invented gunpowder-based weapons and played a critical role in defeating the Japanese warships. Naval firepower was first used in the Battle of Jinpo, where the first fire maneuver tactics and naval firefight took place. At the park, there is the Wibongham Ship exhibition hall. Built in 1945 in the U.S., Wibongham is the name of a warship that served in World War II. Taking it over from the U.S. in 1959, the ship carried out landing and transport operations and even served in Vietnam War. After serving a significant role on the sea for 48 years, it retired on the last day of the year 2006 with great honor. The exhibition hall inside the Wibongham Ship showcases weapons used during the Jinpodaecheop War, artillery made by General Choe Mu-seon, and the typical life inside the warship. The exhibition hall is a must-visit place to stop by if you visit Jinpo Maritime Theme Park. In addition, 13 types of 16 decommissioned equipment from the Army, Navy, and Air Force are on display. Modern Architecture Museum (formerly the Joseon Bank Gunsan Branch), which was established for the economic exploitation of Korea during the Japanese colonial era, was the only grand building outside of Seoul. As described in the novel The Muddy Current, Joseon Bank, which was built to plunder lands of the Jeollabuk-do region, changed its name to the Bank of Korea and relocated to Jeonju. Later it was burnt down while in use as a branch of the Hanil Bank. After restoration, it has become the Modern Architecture Museum where modern building figures and bank-related documents are on display. Gunsan Modern History Museum exhibits the old Gunsan, which was the hub for maritime logistics as a trading port, with largest modern cultural assets in the country. The unique feature of this museum is that it is an experience-type museum equipped with digital technology. In addition, by displaying the relics from the Japanese colonial era, it vividly shows the situation at the time. The museum has a Gyujanggak Library for the Modern Period,* which comprehensively manages documents, videos, books, and academic papers related to Korean modern history and culture. It plays a pivotal role for experts trying to find related data. Honam Customs Museum (formerly the main building of the Gunsan Customs), one of the three remaining Western classical buildings in Korea, the Japanese-style house of Sinheung-dong, which is the largest and the most well-built building from the colonial era, and other historic buildings await you.
