Nakdong River Culture Pavilion was first opened to tell the diverse stories of Nakdonggang River, which flows up to 317 miles and holds beauty and lives in its arms. Nakdonggang Estuary is a brackish water zone where river water and sea water meet. It features reed fields and an abundance of foods, which makes it a perfect seasonal home for over 170 kinds of migratory birds. Inside the culture center, you may not only check out the culture surrounding the river but also enjoy world-renowned artworks with the theme of river. It is also a great experiential learning space that teaches why living organisms in water cannot live in a polluted river or what we have to do to protect our environment in a very detailed and transparent manner even for children to easily understand. When you look at Nakdonggang Estuary from the rooftop garden of the building, you may witness once in a while fish that jumps out and back into the river as if it were dancing. You can also find birds who are waiting for those fish. The culture center offers a live view of the river, which you have only learned through pictures and texts. Nakdonggang Estuary Eco Center exhibits materials on the ecology of the estuary in an easy-to-understand manner and also runs various nature learning programs for visitors including students. In addition, it serves as a research center that studies and investigates the ecology of birds and wetlands. Established in an area where men, nature and birds coexist in harmony, Nakdonggang Estuary Eco Center was designed by an architect named Yasuhiro Yamashita who had won an international architecture contest. Korean pinewood was used on all three surfaces — floors, walls and ceilings — to set up an atmosphere in which you feel like strolling in a forest. What do you think? If you look above from the section that connects the first and second floors, you will find indoor sculptures depicting flying birds, which add a dose of vividness to the environment. Moreover, if you look out the windows, you will be able to observe in person different kinds of migratory birds in the wetlands right in front. As there is a telescope near a window, especially in cold wintertime, it is the perfect place to observe birds from the warm indoors. The second floor features a permanent exhibition hall and a mini library where you can learn more in detail about the birds you have just observed with your own eyes. The library, in particular, has a wide variety of books from those for children to professional literature on ecology, so children and adults alike will be able to enjoy it. If you ask Busan locals what they think about Hwangnyeongsan Mountain, they will say that it is “a place with a beautiful nightscape,” “a great place to stroll or exercise at night,” “a place where you go to see a sunrise” and “a perfect place to watch the Busan International Fireworks Festival.” During the Japanese colonial era, it used to be a mine where copper and gold were dug up. Today's Hwangnyeongsan Mountain is not that vast so it is possible to take a hike in about three hours. It has become a very attractive trail on which you can have a great time even at night. Hwangnyeongsan Mountain’s nightscape is especially famous among Busan locals. There is a cafe near the Hwangnyeongsan Beacon where you can enjoy a cup of coffee while enjoying the scenery. By the way, when do you think Hwangnyeongsan Beacon was first established? The beacon, which is an important means of military communication, was installed at the peak of the mountain in 1422 (the 7th year of King Sejong's reign). Although they are no longer in use nowadays, beacons were a system that used smoke in daytime and lights at night to deliver information quickly to even remote places. This particular beacon was the one restored in 1976 to teach the future generations the spirit to protect local and national lands. Every year, religious rituals for the mountain spirit are held at the restored beacon in addition to the reenactment of a signal fire. For those who are interested, make sure to visit again at the right time.
