Happy Road of Lee Jung-seop — Lee Jung Seop Art Museum The place you’re looking at is an art museum that commemorates Lee Jung-seop who was a genius artist. This place was opened as Lee Jung-seop Exhibition Hall in November 2002 and came to have the current appearance in 2003. Then, in 2004, a narrow trail, a walkway and Lee Jung-seop Park were established and the venue was registered as a Class 1 art museum. In 2008, a creative studio and craft workshop of Lee Jung Seop Art Museum were also completed. The round-shaped exhibition hall consists of two floors, with Lee Jung-seop’s works and relics in the permanent exhibition room on the first floor and planned exhibits on the second floor. The museum has in store 137 items including nine original works of Lee Jung-seop and his silver foil paintings. There is also Lee’s palette that was donated by his wife, Lee Nam-deok. The palette is known as the gift he received together with a special award he won at an exhibition in Japan. Lee fled to this area with his family in 1951. For a little less than a year, they had to suffer from poverty; they even had to go to a beach and catch crabs for meals. But this period is said to be his happiest days spent with his family. Perhaps this is why the works he made in Jeju are the most splendid and the brightest ones. If you look at the works such as Scenery With Seopseom Island in the Distance and Wave and Fish, you can feel the joy of Lee Jung-seop in his days in Jeju. His silver foil paintings are very famous as well. He created about 300 small paintings on silver foils from cigarette packs. Some of his silver foil works were the first paintings by a Korean artist to be exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Happy Road of Lee Jung-seop — Seogwipo Everyday Olle Market Seogwipo Everyday Olle Market is the largest marketplace in Seogwipo opened in the 1960s. The market is divided into different zones, which include a seafood street, miscellaneous goods street, vegetable street and food town, and about 350 stores are currently in business. The 620-meter-long arcade facility opens and closes automatically. A package delivery system is available for visitors to quickly send local specialties and gifts in packages and travel lightly. As the nearby Lee Jung Seop Street continues to attract tourists, many places in the market also offer delicious foods and snacks that the travelers would love. From desserts like Udo peanuts, tangerines and green tea to other Jeju specialties such as omegi rice cakes, snow crab croquettes, octopus bread and modakchigi (gimbap, tteokbokki and deep-fried dish combo), there are so many goodies that attract travelers every day. You can obtain travel information at the Jeju Olle Information Center in the marketplace. There are various facilities such an outdoor performance stage, a fountain and a playground, and a space to park up to 250 cars and 18 large buses.

This is Seogwipo Performance Art Theater, which you can enter after passing through a small ticket office. It opened in 1963 as an exclusive film theater with 667 seats over a 240 ㎡ area. But it hasn’t played movies only; it has also hosted various cultural events of Seogwipo from presentations and speaking contests for nearby elementary schools to performances by pop singers and musical group and even an invitational event of Ahn Eak-tai who composed the Korean national anthem. It is indeed a place filled with nostalgia of the local elderly. In 1973, a short circuit caused injuries for over 100 people, which led to an indefinite closure of business ordered by the provincial authorities. Later, the ban was lifted and it kept its role as a neighborhood theater before it went out of business for good in 1999. It was even on the verge of becoming demolished as the building collapsed once, but after remodeling in 2012, it was transformed into an arts performance hall that maintained the collapsed ceiling as it was, reopening as an outdoor theater. The front where the screen was installed is a wonderful stage with black Jeju rocks exposed, and through the ivy-filled windows, you can see Lee Jung Seop Art Museum nearby and Seopseom Island in the distance. Seopseom is famous for its appearance in Scenery With Seopseom Island in the Distance, a work of Lee Jung-seop. The theater hosts various performances and the lobby of the theater holds exhibits from time to time as well as experience programs on weekends.
