Choi Champandaek (House of Choi Champan)

The story of the Hadong Local Poet Choi Yeong-uk Poet Choi Yeong-uk is a Hadong local who lives in Pyeongsa-ri, the village that appeared in Toji (“The Land”) written by Park Kyong-ni as well as the setting of a TV series House of Choi Champan. Poet Choi is the prime mover who made this village the mecca of the Toji literature. Started as a big fan of author Park, he became a literary person and built a literature museum dedicated to Park, bringing her novel Toji to life. He designed the House of Choi Champan and built the Toji Literature Road. He truly lived in the world of Park Kyong-ni. At a very young age, Choi decided to be a writer after reading Park's article To the Youth Who Want to Write. Being immersed in the works of Park during his youth, he became a poet in his 40s. After several attempts to gain approval from the author Park, he was finally able to build the Pyeongsari Literature Museum as well as the Toji Literature Road. The setting of the famous TV series Toji (“The Land”) and the family house of Kim Hee-sung from the Mr. Sunshine was filmed in the House of Choe Champan in Pyeongsa-ri, Hadong. Originally, this place was used as a filming site to reenact the scene of Toji. As the major background of Toji is Pyeongsa-ri, Agyang-myeon, Hadong-gun, houses and villages were reconstructed here. Starting as the filming site for the TV series, the house has not only made its appearance in more than 10 films but is also a valuable cultural asset that many tourists visit even on weekdays. Walking up the path following the signpost after paying an entrance fee, the statue of Choe Champan reading a book under the big tree comes into sight. Take a memorable photo here as it is a famous photo spot. If you go inside, you can see the location where Kim Hee-sung received a watch on his way to studying abroad in Mr. Sunshine. You are allowed to get inside by taking your shoes off. You can reenact the famous scene by stepping on the wooden floor. A detached quarter where Seohee, the main character of Toji, lived has a pond, so it is very easy to recognize the place. Fans of Toji, either novel or drama, cannot pass the place without taking a photo. If you get close to the stone wall after finishing looking around the house, a golden rice field and a big mountain capture your attention. If you visit right before harvesting rice, you can see the splendid view of golden field that sways with the wind.
