How interesting would it be to tell our children, fascinated by dinosaur cartoon characters and computer graphics, that there is a place where dinosaurs actually existed? The Bibong-ri Fossil Site of Dinosaur Eggs, which spans 3㎞along the coast of Seonso in Deungnyang-myeon, is a living educational site where you can experience the reality of dinosaurs that had only existed in your imaginations before. It was September of 1988 when the fossil of a dinosaur egg, estimated to have existed in the late Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Era, was discovered for the first time on the coast of Seonso. ​​Scholars who had been observing coastal rocks discovered here a nest of herbivorous dinosaurs and fossils of eggs that existed here at least 100 million years ago. Some of the nests that contained at least six to thirty large and small fossilized dinosaur eggs were up to 1.5m in diameter, and some eggs with 8 to 12 overlapped layers of shells were discovered as well. This is an extremely rare case even throughout the world, and meets enough requirements to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the entrance to the fossil site, the dinosaur's eggs and nests, which are in a near-perfect state of preservation, are widely distributed into 5 different regions. This place where about 20 dinosaur eggs have been found so far proves that the Korean Peninsula was one of the main habitats of East Asian dinosaurs during the Cretaceous period.　More than 10 locations for dinosaur egg's nests and 100 dinosaur egg　fossils are observed on the bedrock along the coast. The largest of the dinosaur egg nests are 1.5m in diameter, and the size of　the dinosaur egg fossil is 9to 15㎝ while the thickness of the　dinosaur eggshell is 1.5㎜ to 2.5㎜ . The shapes of the eggs are disciform, oval or globular, and the surfaces have uneven bumps or, in some cases, exhibit severe curvatures. Inside the dinosaur eggs, the dinosaur embryos or their skeletal structures were not found, which makes us estimate that they were fossilized after the eggs hatched. The Fossil Site of Dinosaur Eggs in Bibong-ri, Boseong is not only evidence proving that the location was a habitat for dinosaur, but also an important and valuable source in revealing how and which dinosaurs lived here. The site was designated and is protected as a Natural Monument No. 418 as there is a possibility that fossils of other dinosaur eggs and additional data of ancient organisms may still be buried. Along with the Hwaseong Dinoistenesaur Site in Gojeong-ri, this site is one of the more well-known dinosaur egg fossil sites that have been discovered in relatively recent years. Therefore, this place has an interesting correlation with other major dinosaur remains on the South Coast, which are the Dinosaur Footprint Fossil Site of Uhang-ri, Haenam and Dinosaur Footprint Fossil Site of Deokmyeong-ri, Goseong, and is expected to contribute significantly to the restoration of the dinosaur ecological environment in Korea. The small park set up around the dinosaur egg fossil site is popular among children because of its cutely shaped dinosaur mascot. The rock face where the fossilized dinosaur eggs were found is a crust layer with an unusual structure and features unique ad bumpy rocks that have many holes, big and small, and are purple in color. Another thing to do is to enjoy the purple shaped rocks that nature has created. Nearby is the Boseong Green Tea Field and Haesu Nokchatang so it is perfect for families to visit and tour around.
