About this place
The fortress wall is about 2.5 meters high and 3.5 meters wide and has a 7 to 8-meter ditch that runs alongside the southern wall. Compared with other Korean fortresses, Imjonseong Fortress is higher and about 2 meters thicker. It is the largest fortress of the Baekje Kingdom and has become the subject of much research.
History shows that the fortress was the central hub of the Restoration Movement of the Baekje Kingdom (18 BC - AD 660). In the 20th year of the reign of King Uija (Baekje dynasty), the kingdom was defeated by the united forces of the Silla Kingdom and the Tang dynasty (currently, China). Boksin (a cousin of King Uisa), a monk, and Heukchisangji stayed at the fortress for three years while trying to return the king to power.
As one walks along the winding trail, the view of Daeryeonsa Temple comes in to view and as once at the top, the spectacular views of Oseosan, Baekwolsan, and Gayasan mountains unfold. Those who come to the fortress from Masa-ri, Gwangsi-myeon, can drive and park their car in the parking lot located right below the fortress.

Also called Bongsusan Castle, Imjonsan Castle is located on Bongsusan Mountain, Daeheung-myeon, Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. It served as the base for the Baekje Revival Movement and is a hilltop fortification from the Baekje period. The castle is at the midway point of Bongsusan Mountain with silver grass and azalea growing in the vicinity, and the Yedang reservoir can be seen below the castle. The castle walls are 2.5-3.5m high and about 3.5m wide, with the outer layer of the southern wall made of stone and the inner layer consisting of mixed soil. A gutter 90cm deep and 60cm wide has been installed in the southern wall to transport water within the castle. The large slab of stone covering the gutter is 70cm wide and 30cm high. This castle's four corners are 2m thicker than most places to stabilize the construction, while the castle itself is slightly taller. The southern gate is thought to be the main gate, with a thick stone structure on either side thought to be part of the doorway. The same is thought to be the case at the northern gate. Within the castle are even slopes, and within the southern wall, pottery and roof tile shards can be seen, as well as the remains of a building with stairs. This castle is recorded in several documents as being the base for the Baekje Revival Army along with Geonjisan Castle in Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. A visit to Yedang Lake, Hyangcheonsa Temple, the House of Chusa, and Daelyeonsa Temple, all nearby, are also recommended.
