Hapdeokje was one of the three main water reservoirs during the Joseon Dynasty, along with Yeonan Namdaeji in Hwanghae Province and Byeokgolje in Gimje. Experts believe that Hapdeokje, which is now used for irrigation, was constructed before the Goryeo Era. Only its curvy bank structure remains, but its importance was recognized and the reservoir designated as Chungnam Monument No. 70 in April 1989 and as a world heritage irrigation structure by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in 2017. Hapdeok Irrigation Folk Museum is nearby, where you can learn about the wisdom of our ancestors who understood the importance of irrigation. The museum showcases this history and of our ancestor’s agricultural practices, with artifacts and over 20 irrigation tools for you to try out. Come for a whole new experience! Hapdeokje is currently undergoing improvements, but remains very much a well-preserved habitat for many endangered species including rare frogs, swans and spoonbills. Hapdeokje is a place that you must visit at least once in your lifetime. According to legend, the King of the underworld will scold those in the afterlife who had never visited Hapdeokje while they were here on earth. But of course, you won’t have to say no! An Agricultural Theme Park has floor fountains, a thatched-roof pavilion, a mill, thatched houses and gardens. At Hapdeokje Ecology Tourism Center, watch videos of the nature around Hapdeokje, a Chungnam monument and a world heritage irrigation structure. You can also see Hapdeokje’s flora and fauna using high-tech devices. Hapdeokje Yeonho Lotus Festival occurs every July, when the lotus flowers are in bloom. Come to Hapdeokje for both time with your family or friends and to enjoy the beautiful harmony of nature and people, of tradition and modernity.

Chungcheong’s first Catholic church – capturing the history of the early Catholic church in Korea - Hapdeok Catholic church was originally Yangchon Cathedral and was built in Sanggung-ri, Yesan in 1890. The church expanded after purchasing land in 1899 where it is now and became Hapdeok Catholic church. In 1929, Father Perrin constructed the Gothic-styled brick church that exists today. In 1960, New Hapdeok Catholic church was built in another area and the original cathedral became known as “Former Hapdeok Catholic church.” However, in 1997, the original cathedral became “Hapdeok Catholic church” again. The historic and architectural value of the cathedral was recognized and the building designated as Chungnam Monument No. 145 in 1998. Built on a low hill, the building of the cathedral features two bell towers—one on each front corner. On the front façade of the cathedral are three entrances and three windows, all arched in shape like rainbows. The outer walls are red brick, with grey brick forming the perimeter of the windows and corners of the bell towers. The bottom of each window and each side of the bell towers are decorated with grey bricks forming a rhombus. The cathedral has grown in popularity on social media as the location of several famous movies and TV series. A photo of you and your loved ones at the cathedral will make the perfect keepsake of your visit.
