Mukho Lighthouse

Mukho is a dynamic port. Mukhohang Port began its construction in 1931 and officially opened in 1941. Combined with two words Muk, which means an ink, and Ho, which means a lake Mukho means a place where it is good to write, but an old story has it that the water near the port looked like ink because of coal briquette powder. A small harbor that once transported anthracite became an international trading port in 1964 before ultimately evolving into a national port that transports anthracite and cement. In the 1970s, it became the country's no. 1 base of fisheries and reached its heyday. Over 700 to 800 ships came in and out of the port while carrying coal, cement or squids, and the port brought prosperity to Mukho. As the coal mining and fishing industries fell into a slump, Mukhohang Port once again transformed into a tourist port. There is Suhyup Seafood Processing Center that features not only a live fish center, which offers visitors to Mukho natural live fish and fresh fish caught in the sea near Mukho as well as dried seafood, but also an observation deck from which the entire port can be seen in a single view. In addition, the waterside park hosts various performances and festivals and offers rest while Mukho Ferry Terminal nearby sells tickets for access to Ulleungdo and Dokdo Islands. At Mukhohang Port where you can look forward to another transformation in the near future, enjoy a delicious meal with fresh seafood.

This lighthouse whose light can be identified even from 42km away not only acts as a safety keeper but also makes Mukho a famous nightscape spot. Mukho has been a filming location for countless TV series and movies including Love Me Once Again. The red suspension bridge that appeared in the TV series, Brilliant Legacy, is known as a famous place where love comes true. As you walk down from the lighthouse along the suspension bridge, you will see a statue of an octopus, which protects Kkamakbawi Rock and Mukho, and also find an alley of raw fish restaurants nearby. At the lighthouse observatory that has been remodeled into a maritime cultural space, enjoy the beauty of sunrise and sunset over the vast sea to get away from the hectic daily lives and relax.

Painting the lives of Mukho people It is said that foreign sailors were surprised twice upon their arrival in Mukho. On the night they came to the port, they were surprised by the small lights on the ridges seen from Mukhohang Port that looked like high-rise buildings, and the next morning, they were shocked by the fact that those lights are actually from small, tightly crowded houses sitting shoulder to shoulder like barnacles. Such a scenery tells us how tough and relentless years that Mukho has had to endure. In the days when fish-luring lights had to be turned on all night long and when the lights at drying fields were brighter than the moonlight and starlight in the night sky, Nongoldam-gil and Mukho were restless places. Mukho's waters in the 1960s and 1970s were depicted as “splendid as flower fields of June by the lights of squid-catching boats every night.” People breathlessly walked up and down the steep Nongol-gil while carrying a bowlful of squids, and ran around from one rock to another on Geguseok-gil with a bucket and a bamboo stick hanging a saury at its end just to catch crabs that come ashore on waves and immediately hide in between rocks. At the end of an uphill along Sanjegol, a drying field dried squids in summer and pollacks in winter. From dawn to late night, women gathered in the drying field, cut open the pollacks and cleaned the squids while talking about their families from the day before, complaining or joking all they want before starting a new day. Nongoldam-gil is a village that still holds the life stories of Mukho residents. Mukho's mothers have become grandmothers and lean on a street bench to catch a breath. The restless and breathless days are long gone and, today, it turned into a place where people can relax and take a break from their busy lives. Deungdaeoreum-gil, Nongol 1-, 2- and 3-gil all head towards the lighthouse and each route takes about 20 minutes.
