Geomunoreum Lava Tube [UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site]

Geomunoreum Lava Tube, at an elevation of 456 meters, is a very special oreum among the 360 oreums more in Jeju Island. It is the only oreum to be designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2007 due to its high geological value. The name Geomunoreum Lava Tube is believed to have two origins. One is that, unlike other bare mountains, Geomunoreum Lava Tube has a dense forest, which, when covered in greenery, appeared dark and was called Black Oreum, eventually evolving into Geomunoreum Lava Tube . The other theory is that the name comes from the old word Geomun, meaning sacred or spiritual, thus giving the meaning Sacred Oreum. In the past, lava from Geomunoreum Lava Tube flowed northeast to the coast, creating over 20 lava caves, such as Manjanggul Lava Tube and Gimnyeonggul Lava Tube. These lava caves are large in scale, have existed for a long time, and are well-preserved, with excellent scenic views. Some even show features of limestone caves, which are not typically found in other lava caves, giving them unique global value. This is one of the reasons why Geomunoreum Lava Tube and its lava caves were designated as a World Natural Heritage site. Unlike other oreums, Geomunoreum Lava Tube requires a reservation to hike. Same-day reservations are not possible, but from the 1st of each month, reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the internet or by phone. It is recommended to check in advance before your visit. Reserved participants depart with a guide every 30 minutes, providing an opportunity to experience the beautiful natural heritage with expert commentary.
