济州自古就将山茶树用作防风树。山茶树不仅可以抵御济州的强风，早春还会绽放美丽的花朵，花落后可以榨山茶油。山茶油可以用来用来烹饪、做化妆品，或是用于民间疗法，用途十分广泛。新兴里有济州岛地方纪念物27号——山茶树生态群落。除50余棵树龄超过300年的山茶树外，还有3棵列入保护树种的朴树、南瓜树、天竺桂、土种柑橘树等，形成了大型群落。当地居民积极促进山茶树生态群落公有化，经过一系列努力，分别在第八届和第十届美丽森林全国比赛中荣获和谐奖和森林卫士奖。在通往村庄的路上栽种有长20公里的山茶树作为行道树，每年冬春交替之际山茶花开，清新耀眼的绿色和娇艳的红花形成了鲜明的对比，煞是好看。来到村庄的游客要想尽情享受山茶树带来的乐趣，除了探访山茶树林外，还可以用山茶果和天然原料制做生活用品、制做山茶香皂，参与山茶拌饭、山茶饭团等美食体验活动。村里还建有旅馆和民宿。
