For travelers who enjoy gardens, history and a quieter, less-crowded corner of Seoul, the Changdeokgung Secret Garden (Huwon) tour is usually worth it. It's a beautifully landscaped royal rear garden — pavilions, lotus ponds and wooded paths — that can only be entered on a timed guided tour, which keeps the crowds down and the atmosphere calm in a way that's rare in central Seoul. It's less essential if you're short on time, have already seen several palaces, or prefer to wander freely, since the visit is guide-led and on a fixed schedule. Decide by whether a peaceful, structured garden walk appeals more than another busy palace courtyard.

Access to the Huwon (Secret Garden) is restricted to protect it, so entry is by timed guided tour only rather than free wandering — you join a session with a guide rather than entering on your own. Each session has a limited number of places, with part of the allocation sold online in advance and part held back for same-day purchase at the ticket office. This is exactly why the garden stays calm, but it also means you can't just turn up and walk in whenever you like.

Whichever you choose, confirm on the booking page that the Secret Garden specifically is included, since regular palace admission alone does not cover it.

The garden is lovely year-round, but autumn — when the foliage turns — and late spring are especially popular, which also means slots go faster in those seasons. Earlier sessions tend to be calmer. Because the tour is on a fixed schedule and capacity is limited, the practical advice is the same in any season: decide your date, book ahead, and aim for an earlier slot if you want the quietest experience.
