하멜기념비는 핸드릭 하멜의 공덕과 네덜란드와 대한민국 간 우호 증진의 증표로 1980년 4월 1일 한국국제문화협회와 주한네덜란드대사관에 의해 산방굴사 바로 앞 해변가 언덕에 세워졌다. 조선 효종 4년(1653) 하멜 일행이 탄 네덜란드의 무역선 스페로호크호가 심한 풍랑으로 서귀포시 안덕면 사계리에 표류하게 된다. 하멜은 입도 후 13년 동안 이곳에 머물렀고, 고국으로 돌아갔는데 1668년 ‘하멜 표류기’, 일명 ‘난선 제주도 난파기’를 출판하여 한국을 서양에 널리 밝힌 최초의 사람이다.
